We remember the 383 people buried in the Old Chapel Grounds
We have now fitted the completed “G Section Plaque” in position on the left-hand wall of the stone shelter. The size is 1500 mm x 1150 mm.
Our new Plaque lists 383 local residents, buried in the Old Chapel Grounds from 1775 through to 1873.
This plaque is the culmination of four years of research and lists the names, ages and date of interment of 383 people, originally buried in the Old Chapel grounds – the first burial ground for Farsley Baptist Chapel.
By the 1820s there was no space left in the Old Chapel grounds and burials commenced in the Old Ground section of the Rehoboth followed by the purchase and landscaping of the largest part of the Rehoboth from the 1870s onwards.
Whilst interments in existing family vaults continued until the 1870’s, new graves from the late 1820’s onwards were constructed in what is now our Burial Ground.
Poignantly, we discovered a small number of intact memorials and fragments of memorials relating to people listed on the plaque, actually in the Rehoboth.
It is believed these were moved around 1992, they are individually marked on the plaque and can be visited.
Please see attached photograph of the plaque being prepared for mounting and in situ.
Also attached is a PDF copy of the plaque to avoid any reflection seen in the photograph.
Each person listed on the plaque has also a full listing on our database at the link below:
