A Small Piece of History
We are delighted to add this commercial postcard, produced by Haynes of Farsley.
Based on names that are on current memorials, not showing on memorials in the photograph, we have dated the photograph circa 1907.
It is one od very few photographs of the Rehoboth that exist from the 20th century and was taken inside the entrance area, a very familiar view to all visitors and volunteers.
Around 120 years ago, it was a very different landscape, without most of the Rehoboth trees and with chains and railings surrounding the memorials.
The “hidden” details is possibly the most valuable and has been invaluable in our reclamation and grave re-building work.
Against the horizon , in the middle of the image can be seen the Gaubt memorial, the tallest in the graveyard and definitely the most decorative.
At some point, this memorial either collapsed or was dismantled. All the components exist, it is our aim to rebuild it in either one or two sections. By enlarging this postcard we can clearly see how the pieces fit together.
A major project for August/September 2025 is lifting and rebuilding headstones in the area behind the four tall obelisks in the foreground, the postcard acts as our guide and blueprint for this work.
