Building our first all-weather stepped path

The contemporary maps of the Rehoboth show a number of paths in each Section for access to the graves. None of these were surfaced and due to the steepness of the Burial Ground were not suitable for using as access paths for our volunteers in wet weather.

We recognised that creation of All-Weather Paths was a priority and we were delighted to receive a second grant from Wade’s Charity in summer 2020. Following completion the Top Road we commenced work on our first  “stepped” all-weather path linking the Top Road to the perimeter wall and providing access to the “B” and “E” Sections.

The location for the path was the widest, at 25 metres the longest. Amongst our volunteers are two very experienced Landscapers who planned the project to enable us to produce a professional quality path that was to be tested during winter 2020/2021 with further paths to be built to the same design in 2021.

All the soil was removed. When rotavating, the foundations was used for infill at the path sides or for landscaping ensuring our practice of full recycling.  Once again this work was undertaken solely by our volunteers and completed in October 2020.
